Horai Mikawa Sangoku Rest Stop

Find local specialties, souvenirs, direct-from-farm vegetables, and more from the Horai area at this roadside rest stop.

Walnut sauce-smothered Sangoku Gohei Mochi—grilled rice cakes on a stick—with the shape of cute, circular mitarashi dango rice cakes are a must-try! The area is also famous for its plums, and you can try udon or soba noodles with the plums beaten and mixed in or lemonade using Shinshiro-grown lemons.
A variety of products you'll only find here, like woodwork owls, are on display and perfect as a souvenir, so stop by whenever you're in Shinshiro City.

To the north of the rest stop is a park with Mankoji Temple and its famous garden. Here you'll find the remains of Kakimoto Castle, where Suzuki Shigetoki, one of the Three Heroes of Iinoya who sided with Tokugawa Ieyasu in an attack against neighboring Enshu Province in the 1500s, is said to have resided all alone. These too are spots you cannot afford to miss if you're in the area.
